Court of Myrtles

Court of Myrtles

The Alhambra, Granada, Spain

Water was important to the Islamic culture, representing life, and water was more abundant in Spain than in the deserts of Africa. There are ponds, pools, and fountains throughout the Alhambra. In fact, the Court of Lions (which was under renovation so I was not able to get a very good picture) had a fountain with 12 lions around it. Even in the 11th century, the Moors were able to construct the fountain in such a way that the lions could be used to tell time - each hour the next lion would spit water out of its mouth.
